The Norwegian Folk Museum
In the world´s oldest open air museum - and one of Europe's largest - there are more than 150 buildings - an "old city" with houses from several Norwegian towns, farm environments from the valleys, the fjords and the coastal areas, and the splendid Gol Stave Church from approximately the year 1200. The Folk Museum has more than 230.000 objects, many of which you will find in our indoor exhibitions; National Art, National Costumes and Lapp.
The Resistance Museum
Housed in Akershus Castle in Oslo, the Resistance Museum in Norway was established in 1966, and serves to memorate the many Norwegian soldiers who fought and died against Germany in World War II. The Castle is adjacent to the memorial spot where Norwegian patriots were slaughtered by the Germans. The main purpose of the museum is to educate younger generations of the evil and corruption of foreign rule in an effort to unite Norway in a common goal of national liberty. Prince Harald celebrated Norway's 25th anniversary of liberation by opening the Museum in 1970.
(Vikingskiphuset) The Viking Ship Museum
A visit to Oslo should definitely include a stop at the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskiphuset). Displayed in the museum located on the Bygdøy Peninsula are three Viking burial vessels that were excavated near the Oslofjord. One of the ships, the Oseberg, dates back to the 9th century. The Oseberg, shown left, was built around 815-820 A.D. and used as a sailing vessel for many years before it was used as a burial ship for a prominent woman who died in 834. The woman was placed in the burial chamber in the aft section of the ship. Next to her lay the body of another woman, possibly a servant, as well as her most valuable possessions. Under the ship was a bed of blue clay, while the mound itself was built up of turf. This clay preserved the ship for over 1000 years.
